The use of K-9’s in the search for  paranormal activity is recently growing in popularity. Circle City Paranormal started to put in place a protocol and initial implementation of our dogs in late 2009. Circle City Paranormal knew through our regular careers that dogs were used in a variety of jobs efficiently. Roger and Joe decided to consider how they could use dogs in their search for the paranormal.

Joe and Roger knew from the point they decided to use dogs; that they could not and would not be able to train a dog to search for a “ghost.” There are many groups and people out there saying you can train a dog to search for ghost but, DO NOT believe this. The ability for a dog to search for cadavers,  fugitives or explosives is based on the dog being able to retain the scents and pheromones of what they are looking for. There must be training and retention of these scents for a dog to developed the ability to search for those in the future. The reason a dog cannot be trained to find “ghost” is because we cannot capture a ghost and train the dogs to remember the scent and find it at later dates.

Roger and Joe then learned how a dog works with their normal instincts which has been breed into them. They found out that you will need a dog that has a strong work ethic, above average sense of smell, enhanced nigh vision  and keen ability to hear. That was perfect since in early 2009 Roger got a female German Shepherd puppy he named Wrigley and 10 weeks later Joe got a male German Shepherd he named Kaiser. German Shepherds have all these traits and qualities. Roger and Joe just did basic obedience training for the dogs and then talked to professionals in the field of K-9 handling. Roger being a police officer had many friends on the K-9 unit and he asked what they do when they track a suspect. Joe did things similar and being a paramedic had access to the fire departments search and rescue k-9 handlers. They all said you just need to understand and work with your dog. The dogs will let you know when they have locked onto a sound or movement or smell and will lead you there just based on their genetic make-up. All you have to do as a handler is learn your dogs signs from flipping their ears to the movement of their tails or direction of the nose.

Circle City Paranormal uses K-9's in their investigation based on permission from clients and business owners.  We do not force our dogs into an investigation ever. We will clear the use first before the investigation and make sure all waivers are signed before we investigate with dogs. The dogs we use are not aggressive at all however, you never know if they will get spooked on site and bite somebody. If you do not understand and work with dogs DO NOT TRY to use dogs until you are ready and trained.  And remember a dog is a tool just a tool and will not find a ghost just because it was a ghost.
